Employee Relations
Employees have an ever-increasing number of employment rights relating to:
- Contracts of employment
- Discrimination, harassement and victimisation in respect of gender,
race, disability, sexual orientation and religious belief and age
- Maternity, paternity and adoption
- Flexible working and Working time
- Discipline, grievance and unfair dismissal
- Redundancy consultation and process
- Privacy in the workplace
Given the development, expansion and complexity of these rights, most managers understandably have a very superficial knowledge of what they can and can’t do. Even where they think they know, they are often out of date.
This can be dangerous from two perspectives:
- Either they act without knowing the legal parameters, resulting in costly mistakes in damaged employee relations or compensation claims, or
- They are ‘scared’ to act because they believe that the law prevents them doing so
